They’re usually on top of things like this now. So the only stuff we get will be from people nearby. When Bianchi died at Suzuka there wasn’t much available either.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Wonder if Buford is still around and checks in occasionally, with his insider knowledge I'm wondering if he might have more detail on the Tony Renna crash from 2003. The very few released photos paint a grim picture and it's lucky the accident happened in testing rather than a race day because enough bits ended up in the grandstand to hurt/wipe out several fans. One of those crashes that get whispered about from what I can tell, even the cause is something of a mystery. |

No and I have always been curious. Two I know, Robin Miller and another guy know the details and normally they would tell me but they both said some version of "You don't want to know." I saw the Gordon Smiley crash and Sachs-MacDonald and about 20 other fatal crashes live and nobody was ever so secretive. One thing I do know is his body or part of it was impaled on a fence post and hanging there. Maybe that is what they don't want to say.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Wasn't Sachs-MacDonald at the Indy 500* around 1965, and they died from a fiery wreck? I would much prefer to be blown to pieces and impaled on a fence post than die in a fiery wreck. I seem to remember 'thermal injuries' killed one or both of them. *T'ain't nuthin' better than the Indy 500, tho I do like a piece of pussy now and again.... |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Yes 1964 and Mac Donald died a horrible death burned beyond recognition and not dying for an hour or so after. Sachs was reported to have died on impact from the steering wheel hitting his chest, but there have been numerous reports of him flopping in the flames trying to get out and the woman whose yard I parked in for many years on 15th street never went to the race. Her husband and kids did but she stayed to watch the cars. One year I asked her and she said she went one year and never returned. She said there had been a terrible accident and a driver burned to death before her eyes. "The sight of that man waving hes arms in the flames I could never forget. I asked her what car and she said the one pointed to the outside of the track was right in front of her not the one pointed to the infield. That was Sachs. She had no reason to lie. But IMS and the press most certainly did. So I don't think Sachs died instantly, unfortunately either. |
