Donohue's widow sued (and won) vs Goodyear as a direct result of her husbands crash. These days of course, he'd be monitored and there would be little chance of his brain haemorrage occurring.

Not sure that decapitated head pic is Koinigg.... I always thought he had a dark helmet. Of course it could be one of several drivers who have had the misfortune of their head going the opposite direction to the body. These days often drivers are said to have "died instantly due to severe head injuries" - it's a little known fact that there is only 2 ways to be declared dead at a race track, decapitation & death by fire - every other time, you're transported to a hospital to be declared dead on arrival. This allows the show to go on! This is all based on the Gordon Smiley crash which when he was declared at the track, saw the coroner come to the scene, conduct investigations before re-opening the track for business. It's also a source of aggravation in the Senna/Ratzenberger weekend because Italian law is very strict about places of death and finding someone (anyone) responsible. As we've seen Ratzenberger was dead, the resuscitation attempts were just to show willing, the doctors knew it was going to be fruitless. The main F1 doctor wrote a book and some of it was given over to how he responded to Senna's crash. He stated that they all knew he had massive & inevitable head injuries, but they have a duty to fulfill.

I'm positive some of us will have seen the Alex Zanardi pics, if you haven't, I won't spoil it... but you will be astonished by his story - which I'll gladly offer once the pics pop up.

It's good to see some shots where guys do walk out, it's not all doom & gloom in this thread!

Regazzoni did indeed seem to have someone looking over him for a long period of time, he was involved in a nasty crash in 1968 in F3 where he clashed with a driver called Chris Lambert at Zandvoort (circuit that claimed both Courage & Williamson) and the unfortunate Lambert crashed into & over a bridge, being killed instantly. Regazzoni's luck ran low in 1980 at Long Beach when his brakes failed and he clattered into a parked car, then a tire barrier which saw the front of his car fold back and leave him paralyzed below the waist.

His luck totally ran out in 2006 when it's suspected he had a heart attack as he drove along the autostrada and he collided with a truck, being killed instantly.

Thanks for the last post The Dark, the Lambert / Reggazonni crash is an interesting one with pictures scarce to impossible to find. I did find this brief report from the time.

“Although a lap behind the whole field to start with Regazzoni was blazing a trail through the rear of the field and came up to overtake Lambert as they approached the right-hander over the East Bridge. He tried to take the Englishman on the inside but the cars touched and Lambert shot off the track into the guard rail. Unfortunately some straw bales had been placed in front of the rail and these naturally compressed into a ramp and Lambert's car went over the top and dived onto the pedestrian path below. Lambert was killed instantly along with a woman spectator. Regazzoni's car was inverted, but the driver crawled out almost unscathed.”

Lambert's father led a campaign to get his son absolved from any blame leading to recriminations against Regazzoni who was in the end exhonerated by the FIA.

There is very little coverage of Ricardo Rodriguez fatal crash in practise for the non-championship F1 race in Mexico in 1962 but I've found a couple of photos.

Ricardo was the younger of the two racing Rodriguez brothers and was only 19 when he was invited to drive for the Ferrari team at the Italian GP in 1961 and he amazingly put it on the front row in his first GP.

He drove another five raced for Ferrari in 1962 but as the team did not send a car to the non-championship Mexican race he picked up a drive with the Rob Walker team.

He crashed heavily on the banking and died of multiple injuries.

As can be seen in some of the previous B&W footage, Beltoise chose that exact moment to move position around his car, as the contact occurs he's actually in the vicinity of the right rear wheel, effectively the car gets taken away from him with not a scratch on him.

He does do a recoil but by that time the incident is 50 yds further down the road, then he sort of follows the path his car took, and wombled across the track in the direction of the pits.

Its him at the spot of the tragic death of his friend and teammate Roger Williamson one year later at the 1974 Belgian Grand Prix

He has had a year to calm down, so the interview has no anger but reflection and sadness

You can tell he is embarrassed(not that he should be) by the way he looks away when saying that "we" (as in him) could have done more to save him
