Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Bulgarian rally champion Todor Slavov 31 lost his life in a horrible crash on the second day of the "Tvarditsa - Elena" rally June 29, 2015. Witnesses said that Todor entered a curve at high speed, failed to take it and crashed into the abyss below. Slavov and navigator Peter Iliev were removed with the help of civil defense, who had to cut their vehicle. They were initially transported to Sliven, and then by helicopter to Sofia. Slavkov was put on artificial respiration, but despite the efforts of doctors, he died. His navigator, Petar Iliev, was stabilized in non-life threatening condition.

Not much left of the car after rescue efforts. I wonder if it was just the sudden impact or if there was some peneration / roll cage collapse involved.

On June 13 1953, Tom Cole crashed at LeMans at the Maison Blanche kink. The Ferrari hit a bank and demolished a wooden hut. Cole was ejected from the car during the accident, and died instantly from his injuries.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Mike Salmon, a longtime racer with 13 starts at the Le Mans 24 Hours to his name has died at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness. Salmon's career as an amateur driver spanned six decades and included a top-six finish at Le Mans and a British Touring Car Championship race victory, and he was still competing into his 70s. An appearance in a JW Automotive-run Ford GT40 at Le Mans in 1967 left him with serious burns to his arms and face after a fire caused when the fuel cap was incorrectly replaced at the car's first pit stop.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Stommelen was of course lucky to survive the crash in 75 at Montjuic which killed 5 spectators, thinking of his fatal crash in 83, it marked a quite disastrous spell for Austrian/German drivers in & around F1 at that time. Hottinger, Burger, Stommelen, Winkelhock, Bellof & Gartner all died in crashes between 1980-86, all of whom had some circumstances that hastened their demise and all were either in F1 or close to it. Obviously you can cherry pick times but around then death was becoming less common and averaging a driver a year is an unpleasant anomaly. |

Joe Leonard's brutal career ending crash at Ontario in '74. Joes parnelli eagle offy blew its front left tyre on the front stretch pitching him hard left into the wall. He recovered sufficiently from leg injuries to attempt a come back the next year but was ruled unfit by the indycar medical panel.

another from Leonard's nasty crash. Head injury probably sustained from the steering wheel.
