Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Thanks for the great post. Dr. Steve Olvey was the medical director that day and wrote a book called Rapid Response detailing many incidents. Here's his account of the Smiley incident: "While rushing to the car, I noticed small splotches of a peculiar gray substance marking a trail on the asphalt leading up to the driver. When I reached the car, I was shocked to see that Smiley's helmet was gone, along with the top of his skull. He had essentially been scalped by the debris fence. The material on the race track was most of his brain. His helmet, due to massive centrifugal force, was literally pulled from his head on impact...I rode to the care center with the body. On the way in I performed a cursory examination and realized that nearly every bone in his body was shattered. He had a gaping wound in his side that looked as if he had been attacked by a large shark. I had never seen such trauma." (Rapid Response, pp 98-99). |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Thank you for posting these amazing, but tragic, pictures. They remind me of comments I've heard from both Niki Lauda and Jackie Stewart that, because of the speed, a racing accident has much more in common with an aircraft crash than it does an accident on the public highway. Horrible as these images are and as much as we loved and respect the drivers who were killed, keep posting them - this stuff needs to be seen. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I drove on the track in Indy last week and also rode in the two seater car. The G Forces when going in the corners are amazing. You are being thrown to the outside of the car and the driver has to really hang onto the steering wheel and keep control. If a tire blows or suspension goes out there is absolutely nothing you can do except go into the wall. The thing that caught my eye was seeing skid marks on the track where crashes had ocurred. Knowing the history of previous crashes like Smiley's was on my mind as well but the experience was amazing and I give a lot more credit to the drivers now that I've gone through some laps.

That is amazing I would give my left nut if I was allowed to fire up even a Moped and blaze that around the track I might give a couple fingers to really hit the track for real like you did And trust that I would rip that Moped at its top speed (probably 8 MPH |
