Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I want it to become a sticky not because its a quality thread, and not because I started it, but because I think some members get turned off seeing it bumped all the time I know when I first started I didnt click on threads that were bumped all the time, so I missed videos or pics at the back pages like a moron And im sure some members dont open the thread because they get annoyed seeing it on top bumped all the time |

It's viewed by multiple members more than several times a day. It would be convenient to be stickied.

We don't usually sticky threads in the gore section when the images aren't all on the first page but because it's a popular thread i'll stick it for a while.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Again, I'll jump in with some additional info on the Giunti crash. While Beltoise was a numbnut of the highest order, it's worth noting that Giunti and the car he was following (Mike Parkes - mentioned earlier in this thread) had passed him at least 1 time. It's speculated that when Parkes inched to the left, Giunti thought he was allowing him past which is why he held his line rather than jump out of the way, of course at high speed he had no chance - exactly like Tom Pryce. I believe Beltoise was charged with manslaughter, later reduced and banned for a period of time. Regarding Musso, there's pretty good evidence he was in debt to some serious Italian characters, and the temptation to keep his foot down chasing that seasons biggest prize was too much for his talent. Later that season his team-mate Peter Collins was killed in a similar crash at Nurburgring, right in front of his friend Mike Hawthorn who would win the title that year, and be killed in a road crash in January 1959. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Posted previously when I encountered the Musso pics, so here's more info on the Depailler crash. Alvin may well be familiar with this part of the story as it was originally documented on the racing website that hosted the Gordon Smiley photos. Depailler was actually alive when they found him, his helmet had come off and he'd been 'impaled' in the head by a post, it was obviously going to be fatal - I'm thinking it's similar to Senna in terms of what it did. The fact it was testing, as in not a race weekend, meant that safety "catch-fencing" - basically wire fence connected by posts to slow, & stop the car (very late 70's idea and proven to cause almost as many deaths/injuries as it prevented.) was actually rolled up neatly behind the guardrail in preparation for the actual race the following weekend. Could it have saved him? Maybe..... The final claim is that although it was an entirely private test, and the crash occurred far out into the forest is that their is actual footage somewhere. Allegedly Marlboro, big sponsors of the team had a helicam following the car ready for an advert, they caught all of the action. A senior Marlboro exec is said to have brought the footage and has it stored safely, but their is a copy out in the world somewhere. A claim was made that it's been viewed and is entirely genuine, so perhaps that may pop up someday. |

Very good to see this thread stickied, it really deserves it as a little reminder of times that has passed and men that will go on living in our memories...

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Carel de Beaufort was one of the last amateur drivers to race in F1 and went from being considered a bit of a joke when he started in 1957 to a pretty good performer by the mid fifties. The German GP in 1964 was held at the fearsome Nurburgring and during practice his little Porsche left the curcuit, crashed down a bank and hit a tree. Carel was thrown from the car and died of his injuries three days later. |
