Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Kurt Busch crash during practice for the 2014 Indy 500 in his Andretti team car.

Busch won the 2004 NASCAR Champion and went on to finish an excellent 6th at his first Indy 500 this year after starting 12th.

Amazing stuff thx Burford! How the hell does anyone get away with that 3 years in a row? Do you have any pics or know anything about the '61/2 shunts, and what injuries he sustained in '63? Makes me think that for all it's rep as killer event maybe Indy was leading the way in safety innovation; i can't imagine an F1 driver of that time surviving such a crash.

Oh yeah! Just realised I already posted '61, at first I thought it was Ruby who went over . Is it true Turner walked away and then broke his toe getting in the back of the ambulance?

1962 happened in the race at the same spot as the Sachs - MacDonald wreck 2 years latter in a 3 or 4 car mixup. I know Shorty Templeman was one of them I don't remember who else. I saw a brief video of it once he hit somebody spinning and did a quick snap roll and was not injured.

That was not the full video posted it goes on after that a full 13 rolls and was by far the most serious of the three and came in practice. I remember seeing it from the Tower Terrace the very end when the car came to rest upside down and they started putting fire extinguishers on it although I don't think it burned. I don't remember all of his injuries and in those days you could never believe the newspaper reports anyway but I do think they were a bunch of stuff like broken pelvis ribs internal injuries etc. He also had a scalp wound where the track had ground through his helmet into his head.

People do forget that as dangerous as it was not everybody got killed in every wreck but most of that was pure luck of the draw. Chuck Rodee got killed in one that was so gentile and benign looking when we saw it from the grandstand during qualifying I was explaining to my date how safe it was. That explosion sound was a magnesium wheel exploding but otherwise he will be fine. On the way to dinner a few hours later we hear he was dead. So much for Mr. expert racer boy.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Sounds horrendous, read he had some crushed vertebra as well, he must've hurt all over, serious race car arthritis! Good on you for cheering him up, reminded me of that Simpsons ep when Bart visits the broken daredevil in hospital. Rodee's crash does look very tame by comparison, as did Mike Spence in 68. As you said, luck of the draw.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Well growing up in a racing family I knew racers take care of their own. We were not actually racers but we were racing kids and while none of us actually knew Jack Turner, we decided we would go visit him just for the sheer hell of it. When they told us we couldn't we didn't take no for an answer and it is a fond memory from those days among all the horror something I did made have made a small difference.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

A very nasty looking f3 or f2 shunt at Parabolica, late 60's. I think I have some video of this and some info on the driver that I'll try to dig out.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Frenchman Jean-Pierre Jaussaud launches his Tecno 68 during a seven car pile-up at the 1968 Gran Premio della Lotteria di Monza F2 race.

Jean-Pierre won the 1970 French F3 Championship and raced in F2 on and off. He gave up on single seaters in 1975 and went Sportcar racing, winning the Le-Mans 24 hour race in 1978 and '80 in a Renault. He also tested Renault's F1 car.
