But for all of his success, his Grand Prix career was over within three years, his streamlined car hit by a gust of wind when attempting a high speed record run at the Reichsoautbahn in 1938.

He went off the road at 270 mph (432 kmh), Bernd was found lying among some trees by the road side. Germany was stunned at his death.

Some quality photos of Bernd Rosemeyer's terrible wreck.

That's my fave ever pic of Andrea, stood atop the tyre barrier admiring his work. I think it was Monza? He crashed 18 times that season and wrote off something like 15 chassis. Lucky for him mclaren were pioneering carbon fibre. Raising a glass now to an absolute legend. Quote Martin Brundle - "..a lovely man, passionate racer. A little bit crazy, in a nice way".

Ah, it's an Alfa, not a Mclaren. Different car different season!

And now I actually looked at page 53, awesome stuff, missed that page somehow! Where's Alvin got to? Meantime here's a ferrari over the barrier, does anyone know who where when? Looks 78ish to me.

That's a lovely quote from Brundle about Andrea, De Cesaris' crash is at Imola and the Ferrari 'mishap' was 1978.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

The mention of Derek Warwick discussing Donnelly's crash is more poignant if you know that the following season his younger brother Paul had a virtually identical crash in F3000 at Oulton Park.

Even the cause was the same - a front suspension failure going into a quick right hand corner, whereas Donnelly hit armco and sustained life-changing injuries, sadly Paul Warwick didn't survive his crash.

The accident for Warwick meant the race was stopped and declared a result, Warwick was leading and was therefore given his 5th win in the 5 races that season, that was enough to see him crowned a posthumous champion.

Over time there hasn't been a single picture released of the crash, it's alleged they were purchased by the Warwick family. Apparently it was a very nasty crash of extreme violence.

Wow that was emotional....I'm a huge Derek Warwick fan, top man and top racer. I remember his brother Paul well, watching him in F3 and F3000, terrible shame he lost his life when he was really showing what he could do...

Derek would have won GP's with his eyes closed if he had got hold of a decent car.

Great post.

Derek receiving attention after crashing his Renault. Don't know anything about this, I must have cut the caption off when I took it out the magazine, looks like maybe Paul Ricard in France.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

That Paul Warwick aftermath pic is one of the few left on the internet. Back some years ago, there used to be some aerial shots of the aftermath showing what remained of the car, the rear half burning and I think showing the driver who stopped to help....I think it was Richard Dean but I could be wrong. I'm sure those pics are out there somewhere, I wish I would of saved them back in the day...
