Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Sheene's crash looks shocking. I met him a quite often as a kid in the early 80's when my dad was an FIM steward, and he was a top bloke. I highly recommend the documentary '1976, When Playboys Ruled the World' about him and James hunt. Here's some ropey old pics of Norman Brown and Pete Huber getting killed at Siverstone in 1983. The BBC have full footage of the crash but have never released it. That was unusual back then, they ran Palletti's death for example. I can only assume it was pretty shocking. Note the helmet flying top left.

Top post...I've never seen photo's of this horrible crash before...

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Something a bit more mellow.. I watched open mouthed as this guy bounced off the roof of an ambulance and into the Redgate Lodge beer garden. I think one drinker got skittled with minor bruising and the driver bloke an ankle. Maddest crash I ever saw. I had a whole sequence of it but it's got lost over the years and I can't find it on the web anywhere. Donnington Park c.1990

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

There was a documentary that came out in the mid eighties, a critical look at the state of bike racing safety that was under the direction of a guy called Vernon Cooper who was running the scene in the UK at that time. It contained a head on shot of a couple of seconds of the impact. My dad ended up resigning because he argued for first rate medical care at the scene whereas the AutoCycle Union had an "out of sight out of mind get them in an Ambulence" policy. The last straw for him was when his friend Dave Potter was killed. He lowsided into an unprotected Armco barrier; immediately after straw bales that would have saved his life were were produced from just behind it.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

The late great Barry Sheene. When he was leading national races by miles he used to throttle back on the straight and look down at his bike just to cause some drama. The commentator Fred Clarke was in on it and used to ham it up and the crowd loved it. I think he never really got over those Siverstone injuries, he moved to Oz partly because he thought the climate would be kinder to all the metal in his legs - I'm told the cold really makes it ache.

Throttle wide open with Pat Hennon in hot pursuit, transatlantic trophy 1976. This was a great series that really helped bring on talent on both sides of the pond. Does anyone have pics of the epic Old Hairpin Donnington crash involving Randy Mamola and maybe Greame Crosby about 84ish?

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Danny Drinan crashes his 1991 Lola Buick at turn one during practice for the Indy 500 in 1996 sustaining concussion, a broken left hip and foot and a bruised lung. Danny attempted three times to qualify for the 500 but never quite made it.

Danny was a successful USAC midget car racer.

Original post from page 199.

A couple more of Dan's Indy crash.

Drinan attempted to qualify for Indy in '96, 98 and 2000 as well as Phoenix in 1996 but failed to make the cut each time.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Ernst Degner's near fatal crash during the Japanese GP of 1963 at Suzuka on a 250cc Suzuki. He fell heavily just past the esses and the fuel tank erupted in flames inflicting terrible burns to Ernst. He made a comeback in 1964, winning four more races on a mix of 50cc and 125cc Suzuki machinery. The Degner-curve at Suzuka was named in his honour.

Degner then shattered his right leg during the 1965 Italian GP at Monza. The following year he suffered serious head injuries in practice for the Japanese GP. He retired in '66.

Ernst had defected from East Germany taking many of the MZ racing teams secrets to Suzuki, winning the Japanese manufacturers first GP win, at 50cc level in 1962 then going on to win the championship in the same year. During 57 starts he won 15 races and took 38 podiums.

Ernst died in 1983 of a heart attack.
