Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
The aftermath of Will Gollop's huge crash at Lydden Hill in his Metro 6R4 on the first lap of the European Rallycross Championship in 1991. Will ran wide crashing heavily into a bank and then collected Gary Baker's Ford RS200 when he returned to the track.

I agree, crumpled way more than I would've expected. By 1984 and working with carbon fibre osella were doing a lot better in the crash survival business.. A couple more of Piercarlo Ghinzani's horrid looking shunt at Kyalami. Dragged clear of the wreck |

Off to hospital. One day I will learn how to put more than one pic in a post!

A few more photo's of Nelson Piquet's huge 1992 Indy 500 practice crash, a couple of which are hopefully new to the thread.

An explanation of how Dale Earnhardt's crash at Daytona in 2001 proved to be fatal.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
How the hell did Piquet get out of that! Amazing how close his head came to the wall, I guess the spin scrubbed off just enough speed to make it survivable. Here an unknown hero is ejected from his Bugatti at a historic meet at Oulton Park in 1970. As far as I know it was not fatal. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
The clearest photo I've seen of the wrecked Porsche 935 of Rolf Stommelen at the IMSA Camel GT event at Riverside International Raceway in April 1983. Stommelen was running in 2nd place when the car slammed against a concrete wall after losing its engine cover and rear wing, somersaulted and caught fire. Rolf sadly died of head injuries. It's bizarre that this fatal accident was so close to what happened to him during the Spanish GP in 1975 when the rear wing flew off his Embassy Hill... Rolf had taken part in 63 Grand Prix, starting 54 races with a best result of 3rd at the Austrian GP in 1970. He won the 24 Hours of Daytona 4 times and the Targa Florio in 1967. He had finished 3rd at the 1968 Le Mans and took pole the following year. |
