This was my first Sprint car race. After starting last and finishing second by inches I managed to crash on the cool off lap after the checkered flag. As the British say that sort of "blotted my copybook." Note the first class spectator safety facilities.. The car caught fire and a hero spectator from the infield ran out and dragged me out of the car but there was no fire crew so we were throwing dirt on it for a while until a couple of fat guys in fireman's hats and raincoats waddled over from the infield carrying two fire bottles. One of them was smoking a cigar and one of the fire bottles didn't work. Finally the hero spectator who dragged me out of the car wrestled the other one away from the fat firemen who couldn't get the pin pulled and he put the fire out. Sprint car racing in the 1970s was not for the fainthearted. Well actually it isn't for the fainthearted now either. Note the cigar in the mouth of the firemen on the far left.

Still waiting on news of both drivers, on another forum it was compared to the Giunti-Beltoise crash, fortunately 40+ years of safety may lead to a better outcome.

Memo Gidley has flirted with utter disaster before, his crash into a bridge at Road America (what an awesome track!) is still shocking, and amazing to think he came out virtually untouched.

Fingers crossed this is just a bad wreck with no sustained injury.
