Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Here is some aftermath footage in color

You see the two track crew members and the officer getting ready to pull him out like you see in the picture, however the clip ends before they pull him out. But look at where they are pointing, looks like in the area where you think Piers could be

And god fucking damn those Magnesium Alloy Frames just rage out of control when they are set on fire, didnt they learn that from 1955 Le Mans?

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

They were friends and teammates, in fact the only two British drivers that made the trip to that Grand Prix

In fact I heard a rumor that the team owner asked the veteran Purley to look after Williamson, not in the sense of as a driver as Williamson could drive and knew what to do, the in and outs, but more of dont let anybody mess with him or bump him around on the track, or if he gets in trouble help him

So not only were they friends but the weight of being responsible for Williamson had to weigh on Purley heavily

I would really love to know the story behind this. I wondered why the team owner asked Purley to look after him. Bets maybe?

I cant remember for the life of me where I read that, I think it was an old racing magazine and it was at least 20 years ago. I have racked my brain for like 5 mins and I cant even picture the cover

But I do remember the saying "Rumor has it that...." before the little side story

And from the article it sounded like the owner thought that Roger was getting pushed around on the track because it was his first year in F-1 and the vets would try to shake him up by riding his ass and coasting him for like 10 laps, bump him on turns, the rookie hazing type of shit the vets did to all the new guys back then

Purley was kinda like an enforcer, a tough guy who wasnt like the all the other racers

Niki Lauda got pissed off in a race at Purley for something he thought Purley did on purpose (I dont remember what it was, probably bumped him or cut him off real bad) so when the race ended Niki right away got out of his car and started towards Purleys pit area to confront him

Well some vets saw what Niki was about to do and stopped him and said "Dont mess with that guy, he is crazy" and Niki shrugged it off so they stopped him again and said "No Niki, crazy as in he will kill you if you get in his face"

Niki is a smart guy, he walked away

If I ever find the Magazine I will scan it and post that story

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Here are some pictures and newspaper articles I came across the day after Gordon Smiley died. Some of the crash pictures are different from any of the ones I have

The first scan I will post was the one ran Indy Star that caused an uproar because you cold see his body. The problem is that scanned old newspaper as you will see, looks like shit, so its hard to make him out.

I had that copy of the Indy Star, but cant find it anywhere (of course)

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Came across this gem of a study while looking around my files

I will post the side by side of Gordon Smiley first with no objects circled or highlighted to see if you can figure out where he is inside the wreck

A couple hints, watch the Smiley video I posted in this thread, watch the slo-mo replays from the two camera angles and watch not just where Gordo comes to a stop in the front axle area, but how, watch as he appears to sit straight up on the ground and then fall forward head first like he is about to do a somersault and his hands and arms get caught near the top of the wrecked area he is in

So he ends up looking like you would if you had just woke up after drinking all night and have the hangover of a lifetime, so picture yourself bent over on your knees with your face in the toilet getting ready to hurl, only instead of your hands on the ground or the toilet seat, you are grabbing the counter and side of bathtub both up higher then the toilet (like trying to touch your elbows behind your back)

That is the position you need to keep your eyes open for

Hint #2

While at first glance both pictures seem to be taken from the same angle, they are not

In fact they are taken from opposite angles

Please post your findings so you can get your final grade of the semester from yours truly, Prof Dip Stick

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Your doing a great job with this but its seems only fair to spread the work load....

The first picture is the only image that I know of that shows the accident, Jo's BRM P160 is upside down after hitting a bank stopping just before Hawthorn corner at the back of the circuit. He was being followed by John Surtees at the time, John said, "The rear of the BRM exploded, it careered to the left and burst into flames when it hit the bank."
The second photo shows the burnt out wreck. The flames were so intense that it took a long time to get to Jo. By the time they did he was dead...he had died from inhailing the smoke and fumes. His only physical injury was a broken ankle....
It took place at the end of year non-championship F1 race at Brands Hatch in the Uk, October 24th 1971.
