Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

great video thanx and a great drive by smiley, but as far f1 goes that was a non championship race - the aurora series was for "a" championship, but non championship/aurora series were normally contested by young up and coming drivers in lesser cars . . . the cars were privately entered i believe. they were probably to full f1 spec, but as the video shows they were generally arrows, theodores etc, not williams, brabhams etc
Your right, but in the racing circles I was involved in back in the day when an F-1 race was won by a driver he was upgraded to champion if he had never won a race before

See I grew up with the Indy 500 being the be all end all of race slang

If you win at Indy one time you are a champion

So in my book Smiley = Champion

I'm fairly sure that back in the day if you won a grand prix you were crowned the "champion" for that grand prix. I think it stemmed from the fact that races weren't centrally organised as such (i.e. the FIA didn't have its shit together yet). I recall watching videos from the 50s where they are referring to Moss as champion of Aintree or whatever.

What I find interesting is the period through which Formula One was near universally referred to as "the world championship" even in American racing circles. That probably again stems from the fact that the 500 formed part of the F1 world championship for the first few years.

...I find it interesting anyway haha

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Gus Schrader's wreck from Shreveport 1941. Gus was ejected from the car and suffered fatal injuries after battling with Jimmy Wilburn. His Riverside Special cleared a fifteen foot fence and ended up in a field, Gus lost his helmet and died a couple of hours later of head trauma.

Schrader was an eight time National Sprint Car Champion for the International Motor Contest Association.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Lap 24 of the Japanese GP in 1988 and as Nigel Mansell's Williams-Judd attempts to lap Nelson Piquet's Lotus-Honda they come together at the chicane. Mansell retired and Piquet managed another ten laps before joining him.
