Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Just to be sure everyone knows this, this is the brother of the legendary Gilles and the uncle of Gilles' son, Jacques (confused yet???)therefore not the one who became 1995 Indy 500 & Indycar Champion, 1997 Formula 1 World Champion, that was Jacques, Gilles son. Got that? PS: If our resident video suppliers have the 1994 Phoenix crash between Villeneuve (the younger) and Matsoshita, I think that'll prove a popular one.... it's BIG! |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I have some "inside" knowledge of this accident: Gordon truly was one of the nicest guys ever to grab hold of a steering wheel; I was, and remain, a student of this sport, having participated myself at the club racing level, and by having followed this game for clsoe to 50 years. Gord's worst mistake? He was a road racer, first, and what got him killed was his road racing insticnts: At Indy, one NEVER corrects a skid (oversteer, EVER. Doing so caused the car to 'hook back up, aerodynamically-speaking with the track; When Gord turned right to correct his oversteer condition, the car responded, and at 200+ mph, he had no time to re-correct the immediate right turn the car made into the wall. shame. It was one of the first terrible losses that eventually led to today's safer soft walls.

If what you just posted is "inside" knowledge, then I have been an "insider" from the second I saw the accident for the first time Its obvious that he over corrected, and its obvious that it was the reaction of not just a road racer but of any driver I think Rick Mears said that the harderst thing about Indy to get used to was when starting to slide on a turn you have to train your brain not to over correct but to go with the slide Gordon reacted like he would any other time It was a mistake I dont fault him for one bit RIP |
