Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
A rare photo of British racing driver and pilot Ron Flockhart's overturned BRM P25 at the French GP 1957 at Rouen. Ron suffered burns to his arms and legs but was lucky not suffer worse injury. Ron competed in 13 GP with a best result of 3rd at the Italian GP 1956, but most of his success came in Sportcar racing with wins at Le Mans in 1956 and '57. Flockhart became more and more interested in aviation and set about breaking flying records. Sadly he was killed when his plane broke up while in was in Australia practising for the London to Sydney record attempt in 1962. |

One of the strangest cars ever to contest the Indy 500 was the Hurst Floor Shifter Special from the furtile imagination of Smokey Yunick. Resembling a torpedo with a sidecar, Yunick's strange machine was among the first to think about aerodynamic effects. It was powered by the Offenhauser DOHC inline-four, which was carried in the center fuselage, while the driver was hung out in his own separate pod on the left side of the car.

Riccardo Patrese crashes his Williams Renault at the British GP in 1989 at Silverstone when a stone burst his radiator and the water caused him to crash heavily. Riccardo had a F1 career that spanned an amazing 255 races, winning six of them. He had a difficult start to his career when he was blamed by some for Ronnie Peterson's fatal crash in '78. |

Trust me....or don't. Either way, you haven't really seen this picture until you've seen it in 3D.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
There are some posts earlier in this thread regarding the tragic death of Ronnie Peterson at the Italian GP at Monza in 1978 but I'm posting a few photos that I don't remember seeing and are hopefully new to some people. (AlvinKarpis has some great photos on page 11 - sorry if I'm posting any that have already been posted) The cause of the accident was initally blamed by many on Riccardo Patrese who was seen as being a bit too aggressive and 'cock sure' of himself so early in his career. A number of drivers banded together and said they would not race at the following event if Riccardo was allowed to. Due to this he was banned for a race. Years later an official investigation showed that the starter had started the race before many of the middle field and tail end cars had formed up on the grid, this led to a bunching at the first chicane and directly to the cause of the crash. Peterson was trapped in his Lotus 79 as the front end had collapsed and he had very serious leg injuries. Drivers such as Hunt and Regazzoni dragged Ronnie out of his burning wreck and he appeared that he was safe. But during an operation that night complications set in, he lapsed into a coma and died within hours. Ronnie was one of the fastest F1 drivers during the '70's and won ten races, finishing runner up in the Championship in '71 and '78. He won multiple races in F2 and was the European Champion in 1970. He drove for Ferrari in Sportcar racing winning a number of races. |

A huge crash for Ronnie Peterson at the F3 race at Montlhery, France in 1969. Ronnie would race a March in F1 the following year.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Awesome post Ronnie is by far one of my favorite F-1 drivers of all time. Kind of like Swede Savage, Peterson died not from the initial crash itself, but possibly from Doctors error at the hospital Imagine if Savage and Peterson had recovered and kept racing? We would be talking about them as some of the all time greats for sure (Ronnie is already an all time great already in my opinion) |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
It's another one for Ronnie, this time a non-championship F2 race at Mallory Park in the UK. He was leading before his steering arm broke and spun him into the bank, he walked away with a slightly sore hand...
