Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Norm Hall was in that 1964 Indy 500 wreck, spinning into the inside wall, well behind the crash to avoid running into the wall of flames ahead. His career, but fortunately not his life, ended the following year at USAC's first road race at Indianapolis Raceway Park. He flipped his Watson Roadster and his foot went through the open floor pan and had to be amputated due to the damage.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I haven't read all 300 pages of this thread, but wanted to point something out. Picture 2, looking down on the crash is one of the first generation Hurst tools aka the Jaws of Life. Indy needed a way to rapidly extricate drivers from the mangled wreck. Out of that need was born the Hurst took. Consisted of the hydraulic generator, 2 extremely high pressure hoses, and the Spreaders and the Cutters. Indy Fire Dept as well as others across the country saw the tools...and the need for them in every fire department. 1st gen were super fucking heavy. Wasn't until late 90s when they really came down in weight. Then in the last decade, all electric battery powered tools have hit the streets. I think there have only been three crashes that have required the engine aka pumper to come out on the track at Indy for fires. Rest were handled by the Fire crews in the pickup trucks. Very simple design. No pump, just high pressure gas powered systems delivered the agent of choice to fight the fire. Open nozzle and the agent comes out almost immediately. On a fire engine aka pumper, you have to put it in park from drive. Switch the gear box from drive to pump. Put the clutch in and put it in gear. From there you have to pull the tank to pump to get water from the on board booster tank to the fire pump. Then the driver has to pull the lever to send water to the hose of choice. Takes time. Time that they just didn't have at Indy on the track Fire Crew trucks. Lots and lots of people are alive worldwide because of rapid extrication using all these tools developed to save Indy drivers. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I apologize if this has been stated, but more than the video is famous. The sound of this crash has been used as the generic car crash audio for every sound effect tape/record/CD. I still hear this audio recording used today, mostly now for cheap car insurance ads on the radio and sometimes TV advertising. The audio matches up exactly with the visual tape of this accident because you can hear the secondary collision between the him and the car that came in behind him. It is all a hair off, which is probably due to the speed of sound lagging just a tad over the distance. If I had to guess I think the AV crew was using a parabolic microphone to zero in on audio of wherever the camera was trained on. |

There seems to be a new good documentary on Amazon Prime called 'Rapid Response' which follows Olvey's book. Highly recommended viewing.

There's also a good video on the Holmatro Safety Team called Yellow, Yellow, Yellow which spends a lot of time discussing at some length how Hinchcliffe took a suspension spear to the ass. Lucky boy, and a fine hour long video too! For those who like these kind of things, Hinch's accident led to him meeting up once again with his prom date, and last year they got married. So he definitely ended up a winner! |
