Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

I think it was NASCAR.
I'm still trying to find it.
Could't have been NASCAR at IMS in the 80's. Their first race there wasn't until 1994. I'm thinking on this... A car #, or ANY more info would be helpful... If it IS a stock car, or IndyCar, thats right up my alley. Outside of American racing, my knowledge is minimal, at best! lol

Disaster on the Costa Brava. Walter Fred's destroys his lovely Lancia Stratos during the historic rally in 2008.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Remember when three time F1 World Champion Ayrton Senna tested a Penske Indy Car at the Firebird Raceway 1992?

Emerson Fittipaldi's crew chief, Rick Rinaman,
'So out he went, warmed the car for a couple of laps, came back in and said everything was all right. Out he went again and stood on it for two laps - a track he's never been on, a car he's never been in - and in about three laps he was quicker than Emerson. I mean, everybody was just in awe. Back he came and of course, everybody, the engineers, myself, and Rick Mears gathered around the car to hear his comments on it. Listening to this guy explain what this car was doing was unbelievable. The guy was able to tell you things about what the car was doing that I had never heard our drivers explain before. He was telling us when the ground effects would give up, when the suspension was working and when the downforce was working. It was an amazing amount of information he gave to us in about five minutes. He left an impression on everybody there which was like when are you coming over here?'

Senna, 'Everything was very new to me. I had to get used to driving with a gear lever again, to a clutch pedal, to the turbo engine, and to the brakes, which are completely different from those in F1, not being carbon brakes."

"The Penske reminded me of the old days in Formula 1 where human side was the most important thing. Today Formula 1 is so sophisticated that the computers do most of the driving for you. If you have a clever computer, you are in good shape; if you have a monkey one, you’re in trouble, you know? What I experienced with the Indy car was that human input has a tremendous value – and I really got excited about it'

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Tom Pryce and Jansen VanVurren

Frame by Frame study I did years ago from a ripped recording off the Speed Channel

A the time it was the best quality clip I had seen of the accident. In fact its still pretty damn good even today

I slowed it way down, but not so much so to completely destroy the clarity

Seeing this accident frame by frame is just as shocking and horrifying as the first time I saw this accident 20+ years ago

RIP to both Tom and Jansen

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Edward Gulbeng Eliseian's fatal crash at the 1959 Milwaukee Mile.
Ed was famous for stopping his undamaged car during the 1955 Indy 500 in what would be an unsuccesful attempt to safe Bill Vukovich from his wreck and spinning during the 1958 Indy 500 that started a chain of events that would lead to the death of Pat O'Connor.

On lap 29 of the USAC Indy car 200-mile race at the 'Milwaukee Mile,' Ed spun on oil and rolled over. The fuel tank had ruptured and the roadster erupted in flames, taking over 9 minutes to extinguish. Eliseian was beyond help when he was dragged clear.

A photographer who saw the crash said later, 'Elisian did a half spin and hit the wall with the left rear, approximately 50 ft from where I was sitting. I started filming. There was no one to block my view. The car did not bounce off the wall, instead the left rear tire rode up the wall and the car turned over. It did a half spin, so it was facing the right direction, but upside down, and leaning to the right, blocking Elisian’s exit. Then, Whooof, the car burst into flames. Why? It seemed harmless to that point. I had to stop from time to time to wind the movie camera. I thought I saw some movement in the cockpit area. A guy with a CO-2 extinguisher ran from the infield and started spraying. The fire got worse because things started to burn other than the methanol fuel. The race was stopped, and big fire trucks arrived on the scene and started spraying everything. At this point I knew I had just witnessed a human being burning to death. The bulk of the flame was in the cockpit area, similar to Pat O’Connor’s car at Indy in ‘58. But Pat was beyond knowing. Elisian, on the other hand, had just suffered a most horrible and painful death. The car was within 10 feet of the first turn bleachers. I was told later that the spectators felt the heat of the fire and the spray of water and chemicals trying to extinguish the blaze. The safety crews placed blankets against the fence to shield the spectators from what they might see. From my vantage point, I saw just a brief couple of seconds, and that was enough. The first turn looked like a war zone. It was quite a mess for just one car.'

A member of A.J. Foyt's pitcrew remembers, 'Elisian came along and didn’t see the oil and he slid into the wall. The car looked like it wasn’t going to roll over at first… Then it went past its balance point and flopped over. I saw him reach down and start to unbuckle his seat belt. A little trickle of flame came down out of the cockpit and onto the racetrack… There was no explosion. The fire just flared up before anyone could run across the track… Jimmy Bryan and some of the other guys were down there and they could hear him screaming… There was no way you could get to him.'

Mario Andretti's wrecked Lotus 64 after the right rear hub broke at practice for the 1969 Indy 500. Mario received burns on his face from the subsequent fire. Mario went on to win the race, his single Indy 500 victory.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Found the 2nd Camera Angel of the frame by frame I did on the Tom and Jansen accident

You seen Jansen coming out of the left side of the frame doing a backflip, if you look very closely at the bottom of the screen you can see Jansens face for a few frames as he comes out of the backflip

I hope this isnt true but I can swear that I see a horrible grimace of pain written all over his face

I hope its not and that he died instantly

RIP again to both

Natz Peters firey crash at Daytona Speedway in 1984. The first photo shows him losing it coming out of the fourth turn, the car is hit as it goes broadside and erupts in flames. Natz was hospitalised with facial burns.
