Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I just found a way better quality video of Mario Andretti hitting some debris and flipping 6 times in 2003 when he was attempting a comeback. I posted a horrible quality version of this video way back in the thread This clip is way better quality off a TV program |

Gerhard Berger's fiery crash at the San Marino GP at Imola 1989 when after some kind of failure the Ferrari 640 V12 went off at the Tamburello and burst into flames. The fire-marshalls were on the scene in seconds and Gerhard who had been knocked unconscious in the impact was rescued from the car suffering with burns, mainly to his hands. He only missed one GP before returning. This crash showed just how safety had improved over the years. Gerhard took part in 210 GP's winning ten races over an eleven year period. He was also succesful in F3, Sportcars and Touring cars. |

The Italian F3 Championship 1970 and Claudio Francisci (left) and Tino Brambilla (right), go toe-to-toe after a 'disagreement' on the track. Francisci competed in the Italian Formula Three Championship in 1969 finishing third and made his European Formula Two Championship debut later that season. He returned to Italian F3 the next year and finished second in points. In 1971 he made three European F2 starts in a Tecno. In 1972 he drove in six of the fourteen European F2 races for the Elcom Racing team in a Brabham BT38.Francisci made one European F2 start in 1973 but was then largely away from racing until 2003 when he began racing a Tiga in the Italian Prototype Championship. He raced there from 2003 until 2009 |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
My laptop is playing up...bloody thing. This is the photo that it should have attached to the above post with some info about Tino. Ernesto 'Tino' Brambilla is a former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer and a professional race car driver from Italy. Born in Monza, he was the brother of driver Vittorio Brambilla. In 1959 and 1961 he finished in 10th place in the 350cc Grand Prix motorcycle championship. Brambilla competed in two Formula One Grand Prix races, firstly in the 1963 Italian Grand Prix with Scuderia Centro Sud, driving a Cooper, which he failed to qualify. For the 1969 race he was entered by Ferrari at Monza, but the car was ultimately driven by Pedro Rodríguez. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Berger's crash was a huge one alright. The way the camera caught his car just going straight on into the wall was shocking enough, but then came the fire. I know I can't have been alone in thinking of many "chargrilled Berger" jokes for school the next day! The crash occurred at the Tamburello curve, where Senna would die 5 years later. Interestingly enough the crash was attributed to Berger's driving style of cutting the kerbs at some of the tracks chicanes, this damaged the front wing and it failed going into the corner. The color photo is an incredibly rare one, many "fans" were completely unaware that the car had rolled after impact, this showed much more of the forces that were at work. The cause of this crash would be almost identical in the case of Berger's compatriot, Ratzenberger's fatal one at the next corner in 1994. I used this accident and a feature on how his helmet had been designed to withstand such impacts as one of my science projects. Got me a very good grade I'm pleased to say! |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Looks like he hit the wall at roughly the same angle as Smiley, only 100 miles per hour slower. Can anyone tell from this video what his speed was at impact?

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I cant say for sure, but from judging from the track im guessing around 100mph And also Bergers car was still semi intact, Smiley's car pretty much disintegrated I say your thought or a 100mph difference is a good guess |
