Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Just to be a pain in the butt Alvin, it was actually Riccardo Paletti.

He died in a startline crash in the 1982 Canadian Grand Prix. One of the most incredible seasons for horrendous crashes, Paletti would be the 2nd driver killed that season after Ferrari legend Gilles Villeneuve (father of Jacques, the 1997 world champion & 1995 Indy 500 winner).

Villeneuve was killed in an awful crash where he was thrown out of his somersaulting car after a collision with Jochen Mass. The Canadian track was renamed in his honor. That day his team-mate Didier Pironi qualified on pole, but stalled on the grid. Paletti started 23rd, and as cars swerved around the stationary Ferrari he didn't see it (It was only his 2nd F1 start).

He piled straight into the back of the car at approx 120mph. As can be seen the front of the car was destroyed. After 40 seconds, and surrounded by medics & other drivers, the car caught fire. The flames were quickly extinguished, but Paletti died from massive chest & thorax injuries.

His wrecked car came to rest directly in front of his family, who'd made the trip from Italy to see their son race for the 1st time in F1.

On a side note, Pironi would be dominating the championship that year seemingly on course to become the 1st French World Champion, till in practice for the German GP he copied Villeneuves crash, he was slightly luckier though, as he only broke 3 of the 4 seat retaining bolts, so remained in the car, suffering massive leg injuries. He would never race in F1 again and was killed in 1987 in a powerboat crash off the Isle of Wight.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

It would be interesting to know if there are any more "rare" finds out there. I previously mentioned the Depailler footage, for years it was denied that things existed, but now it's pretty accepted something is out there.

Other crashes that seem shrouded in secrecy are:
Michele Alboreto - killed in Germany, only a single photo of his car which went over the barriers upside down exists. The word is he was decapitated and the damage to the top of the car shows that to be more than plausible.

Marcel Albers - killed at Thruxton, a pic was in the national papers showing the car in mid-air. Parts of it landed in a spectator area. I'm sure something else must be somewhere.

Paul Warwick - a crash identical to Martin Donnelly's unfortunately with fatal results. The footage was apparently bought up by his brother, F1 driver Derek Warwick so who knows if anything is still free.

Kesjar Csaba- Bit mysterious this one, as a hope for the 1st real Eastern Bloc driver to break into F1, he was being pushed for a seat in 1987. He had an unexplained accident where he simply didn't even attempt to break for a hairpin at Norisring. He too was rumored to have suffered the dreaded "massive head injuries" after going through the barrier unchecked.

Other non-fatal accidents in the F1 world which happened in testing are Fisichella, Zonta & Lamy at Silverstone - all different years, but all involved serious air!

Finally a crash which some may not even be aware of, but it's worth hunting down, Johnny Herbert's monster stack at Brands Hatch in 1988. I'll not give too many details but after a restart 25 cars left our sight...... 5 came back. Johnny sustained injuries which definitely hampered his F1 career even though he did go on to win 3 races.

Geoff Bodine has a massive crash at the Daytona 250...
Wow, awesome pics of this crash. That NASCAR safety cage that wraps the drivers has saved a ton of lives...

Last night I fell asleep while making that post, I loaded the pictures and was just starting to write about what happened and then convert the video and post that as well

When I woke up at an hour or so later with drool running down my chin onto my shirt I saw a screen message saying something along the kines of, post is timed out and I must have hot the retry button instead of the quit button

Because this morning I was shocked to see the pics and some babbling about being busy and misspelling a name, I didnt finish the post at all so I will delete that and start fresh with one of the worst deaths in racing history, the video and the pics

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Alvin thank you for this! Been spending a couple of days wending my way through all this awesome material. I remember watching racing with my dad on Wide World of Sports in the '70s and I remember some of these crashes. A lot of names coming back to me. Horrific yet fascinating stuff. Bravo!

I've been looking for a number of these...
The Paul Warwick crash particularly, there is nothing at all out there. There's just that one stock photo of Albers, one of the aftermath of Alboreto's. Perhaps there is stuff out there somewhere....

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Monaco GP 1955 and two times World Champion Alberto Ascari becomes the first F1 driver to crash into the harbour just after taking the lead.

Alberto was rescued from the water with facial injuries, but four days later crashed a Ferrari sportscar testing at Monza, and was thrown out of the car and killed instantly.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Australian Paul Hawkins became the second (and to date last) F1 driver to go swimming in Monaco harbour in 1965 while racing a privately entered Lotus 33.

Paul took part in three GP's and was a very well respected Sportcar driver, winning the 1967 Targa Florio and the Monza 1000km in 1968.

He would sadly perish in a firey crash at Oulton Park in 1969 after hitting a tree while driving a Lola T70.
