8. Mark Dismore Indy 1991 From The Video Above

Mark Dismore has the exact same crash as Kevin Cogan did a couple years before

However Cogan was unhurt and Dismore was severly injured

These are scanned out of a Racing Mag so there are not great quality, but they are horrifying

6. Pat "I want to stop writing for "Car and Driver" for the month of May so I can do the following: crash at 180mph, break my jaw in 16 places, suffer the worst concussion Indiana doctors have ever witnessed in the history of the universe, and do it in front of 400,000+ fans" Bedard: Indy 1984 From Video

Edit: Sorry about the long nickname, I didnt come up with it, its what he goes by even today

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

I hardly ever post here, although I've been a member for some time. I just have to say that this thread is one of, if not the best thread I've seen here on DR.
Thankyou Alvin, absolutely fantastic stuff, dont stop posting these pics and vids, for someone like me, who dabbles in motor sport its both morbidly fascinating and tremendously scary.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

I will always keep this thread going

In fact im just going to post most of my videos here as well to go along with the pictures, unless its a huge discovory of famous crash with a new camera angle or some variant, then I will put it in the Death Vids section

Until that happens I will just post everything here so its all in one thread that will get bumped once every day or two as opposed to 50 separate threads clogging up the forum all with different names and content that will be impossible to locate in a year when they are all spread out between pages 1,000-5,000

Bedard's crash was ludicrous

Most people at IMS (im sure your uncle included) thought Bedard was dead

He is very very very lucky that he only broke his jaw and had a severe concussion (both of which he recovered from after a short period) because that was a death crash

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

And leg injuries are the most common
I can see how this is true.

I don't know enough about the construction of F1 or Indy cars to know this, but is there a rollcage in the forward portion of the car? Or is it simply fiberglass (or whatever)? I would guess the latter, as the front ends usually seem to disintegrate.

Ratzenbergers crash from various angles

The clip is in German, but you dont need to understand German to understand what is happening

RIP
The way you can see his head roll after the crash was heartbreaking.

assuming we are looking at indy car accidents between the late 70's and mid 90's, leg injuries were the more common. while the monocoque the driver sat in was getting stronger the front part was regularly destroyed. now they sit much further back in the car but back then, while the cars were getting much, much better they were still too far forward and the nose cones were not to the standard they are today
danny ongias 81, derek daly, rick mears 84, aj foyt, scott pruett 90, nelson piquet 92 and stan fox 95 were testament to that
danny, derek and stan all lost the front of their cars and had their legs hanging out probably nelson's too

f1 was similar in regard to safety as well, but an f1 car generally only does 300 on the straight and then brakes before it hits something. f1 accidents happen at varying speeds with sand traps, tyre barriers and the like, so it is a relatively safer sport
an indy on the other hand averages 300 and when it crashes it is always a big impact

edit - to my knowledge stan fox did not receive any real leg injuries from indy 95. he was knocked out on impact and amazingly, his limp legs were not badly damaged while getting flicked around other cars and the walls. he did recover from his serious head injuries but was killed in a road accident 5 years later
