An 18 year old college student in Samastipur was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her rented apartment.

According to the news and preliminary police reports, her body was discovered by her boyfriend, who went to her place because she was late to meet him for a study session. He allegedly opened the door to find her hanging from the fan and panicked, calling his mother first, and then the police. Her family then arrived and cut her down.

According to the boyfriend and some of the girl's friends, she had had a major argument with her mother the night before, a row over her having spent a large portion of her scholarship money on a new cellphone. She was very despondent about it and neighbors said they heard her crying all the next morning.

According to the parents, the boyfriend and his mother strangled the girl (for reasons unknown) and then staged a hanging suicide.

The body was taken for postmortem (which is not yet released) and the boyfriend taken into custody. He was released two days later when the police decided that the postmortem and the scene showed no indication of foul play and that her death was clearly suicide by hanging.

It can go both ways in India, but suicide is far more common. My guess is that'll be the final ruling, but the boyfriend can't be 100% ruled out.
