20-year-old A.S. was the sole breadwinner of a family that depended on free food distributed by the government to economically disadvantaged Indians. She earned a living by offering make-up services to women in her neighbourhood and doing small jobs at weddings and other events.

In the early hours of New Year's Day, A. was riding her scooter when she collided with a car with five men inside. According to the driver, who was drunk (two bottles of liquor were found inside the car), he felt something being tangled underneath his vehicle, but friends urged him to continue driving. Other reports claim that the men didn't notice because of the loud music on their radio. They have been arrested.

One of the men is apparently a local political leader associated with the BJP, one of the main Indian political parties.

According to the post-mortem report, the provisional cause of A.'s death was "shock and haemorrhage due to injury to the head, spine, left femur and both lower limbs". A's friend claimed that she was drunk, a claim rejected by both A.'s family and the autopsy reports.

A.'s family had alleged that she was sexually assaulted because her body was naked when it was recovered, but police have said that the post-mortem exam showed no signs of this.

The backside photos are road rash where her flesh was scraped away and bone partially denuded by the pavement.

She had very little damage to her front side, comparatively, because she was on her back for most of the 13km that she was dragged under the vehicle.
