During large-scale political protests that had recently erupted in Hong Kong, a 21-year-old music undergraduate fell from a building in Sheung Shui on June 29, 2019, amid demonstrations against the proposed extradition bill. She jumped from about 26 floors above ground after leaving final words on a wall opposing the bill and rejecting the government's description of the demonstrations as a riot.

After police arrived, they covered her message with black plastic sheets and told the media that romance problems had led her to kill herself. Her death was among several linked to the protest movement that summer.

To the people of Hong Kong:
Although it has been a long struggle, we should never forget that we must adhere to the ideals we always held so dearly. [I] sincerely demand [the Chinese government] to revoke the [extradition] bill, debunk the “riot theory” (Chinese government’s public stand of the protesters being rioters manipulated by the West), release the student protesters, fire Carrie Lam (Chief Executive of Hong Kong), punish the police. Hopefully I could use my own life to exchange for the fulfillment of two million Hong Kong people’s wishes. Please, keep fighting.

It is really weird seeing news from my hometown reach DR. I know politics isn't exactly the focus here but in fact, this is the second suicide case this month where people took their lives to protest against the government. To give a bit of context, 200 million people took to the streets two weeks ago to rally against a pro-Chinese extradition bill. Yet those in charge are ignoring all the demands and it's really sad to see how this dispiriting situation turned into downright tragedy here...
