Homicide with an Axe
The Czech Republic. A 57-year-old man was found dead in a house in a pool of blood following an altercation with another person. Several slash, stab, and cut wounds were found on the body of the deceased. Fig.1 A cluster of slash wounds. According to initial police information, the assailant was a 60-year-old man who had previously been convicted of violent crimes. He later testified that after consuming spirits with the deceased on the evening of the incident, a conflict had broken out, resulting in the death of the other man. Because he had been drunk at the time of the conflict he could not recall what gave rise to the assault, nor any further details. An indicative alcohol breath test found an alcohol concentration of 2.55 g/kg (3.14 g/L). During the crime scene inspection, a flick-knife with an 8 cm blade and an axe with a 7.5 cm blade were collected; both of which were stained with the blood of the deceased. Fig.2 Contused lacerations on the right side of the head and in the region of the right ear lobe. External examination found traumatic deformation of the right side of the head. A total of 23 slash, stab, and cut wounds, as well as contused lacerations, were identified on the scalp, face, and neck. Superficial abrasions and bruises were identified on the fingers and the dorsal side of the right hand. Fig.3 A cluster of skin abrasions and contused lacerations on the left side of the head, where the head was held against a hard surface. Fig.4 On the right side of the neck there were two stab wounds and one cut wound. The 23 wounds were comprised of eight slash wounds, two cut wounds, two stab wounds, and eleven contused lacerations. On the right side of the head and in the area of the right ear lobe, the wounds were grouped into a cluster involving eleven slash wounds and contused lacerations ranging from 2 to 10 cm in length. Numerous skin abrasions and bruises were identified in the proximity of these wounds. Another cluster involving small contused lacerations and skin abrasions was identified on the left side of the head, namely on the forehead and the eyebrow. Superficial contused lacerations, skin abrasions, and bruises were also found on the left eyelids. A further small bruise was found on the lower right eyelid. Two cut wounds and two stab wounds were identified on the neck, three of which were located on the right side and one on the left side. Extensive superficial abrasions and bruises were identified on the dorsal part of the right hand. Fig.5 Skin abrasions and bruises were found on the fingers and the dorsal part of the right hand suggesting attempted self-defense by the victim. Fig.6 The axe used by the offender to kill the victim. Internal examination revealed comminuted fractures of the neurocranium and a superficial slash wound in the right temporal bone as well as in the adjacent parts of the right parietal and frontal bones. Slit-like defects were found on the outer meninges (dura mater) in the region of the right temporal lobe of the brain. Under the dura mater, there was a small amount of liquid and coagulated blood. Severe lacerations were identified in the region of the right temporal lobe, together with a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Two stab wound thrusts were identified in the throat. None of the major vessels in the neck were damaged. Toxicological analysis using gas chromatography of a blood sample taken at autopsy showed 3.60 g/kg of ethanol. The immediate cause of death was due to brain contusions. - This post is for educational purposes only and is nonprofit. Herm, Amazing how thick the layers are that cover the skull. I press on any part of my melon and it feels like bone right under the epidermis. |
