Apparently, according to the killer himself, Islamic fundamentalism had nothing to do with the the crime, as when he confessed to the crime he blamed it on 'problems at home and work' despite the homemade ISIS flag and islamic slogans left at the crime scene, and despite he stated to the officials who arrested him that he was a member of ISIS. He was known to french security services since at least 2006 but an investigation into his 'possible radicalisation' was dropped in 2008.
