And how could I forget my first ever 'hanged girl'.

The photos that initially generated my interest in the subject; none other than the lovely, ill-fated Masha Bruskina.

A 17 year old Russian-Jewish partisan who was captured and strung up by the Nazis, her execution was one of the best photo-documented during the entire war...and possibly the best photo-documented 'official' execution of a female ever.

Hanged with two companions in the doorway of an old yeast factory, witnesses to her hanging reported later that she faced the rope valiantly, keeping her composure and remaining upright and staid until they kicked the bucket out from under her feet.

Unfortunately, after that, witnesses reported that she died very hard, fighting against the rope for the better part of a minute (clear evidence of her agonized struggle in the 3rd picture below) and eventually pissing and shitting all over the muddy ground beneath her as she gasped for her dying breaths.

A sad, undignified end for a brave little girl with a strong spirit.

It's weird how some of them piss themselves. I presume the others had nipped to the loo before they topped themselves.

Most hanging victims do piss themselves. It is a very common side effect of strangulation, due to pressure on the carotid artery/vagus nerve and deprivation of oxygen to the muscles. But even if they manage not to piss themselves while choking, it often happens after death as a result of primary flaccidity.

The ureters deposit small amounts of urine into the bladder every 10-15 seconds. So even if they 'nipped to the loo' twenty minutes earlier, there's still a good chance they'll wet themselves.

As a general rule, if you see a hanging victim who hasn't pissed themselves, there's a strong chance that the urine has simply dried by the time the photo is taken or that it wasn't enough to soak all the way through to the outside of the pants.
