Re: Gunshot Damage to the Mouth
Self inflicted GSW's especially in the mouth are rather nasty. The reason for the explosive looking injury (almost a flower like spiral skin splitting) is the result of the gases that accompany the projectile. When the gasses are contained in a cavity (like the mouth) the force of the gasses along with the speed and energy of the projectile causes this type of wound. The unburnt powder residue also causes a "tattooing" effect on the teeth (as shown in the last photo) or inside the mouth. In some cases the tattooing is so deep that it cannot be removed and creates a permanent mark. In the days before smokeless gun powder, it wasn't uncommon for a close or contact gunshot to set the individual's clothes on fire or that the wound would be partially or fully cauterized by the powder.
