In the Krabi's Ao Luk district, Thailand, at around midnight on 10th July 2017, neighbours of the village head, Worayuth Sunglung, heard gunshots coming from his house. Police arrived at 1.30am to the sight of a family slaughtered, execution-style. 8 members of a household of 11 people, died, the other 3 were seriously injured. The following died at the scene: Duangporn Sunglung, Suriya Sunglung, Sutthipong Prikdam, Phetdao Sunglung, Anna Butrterb, Kingthian Sunglung + Praemaithong Sunglung. Worayuth Sunglung, Kingthian + Praemaithong died at the hospital. Witnesses told police that they saw 6 or 7 men arrive at the house in two vehicles at about 4pm the day before. The men wore military-style camouflage clothes + they were all armed. They pretended to be authorities checking the house + held everybody inside the house. Worayuth returned to the house at about 8pm + he was handcuffed. Neighbours heard gunfire at about midnight. The assailants took Worayuth's Toyota Yaris + left. Shortly after the killings, police arrested eight suspects including Surifath Bannopwongsakul, also known as "Bang Fath". All of the suspects were prosecuteded. On 28th March 2018, six men were sentenced to death for the massacre. 2 other people, 1 of them a woman, received jail terms for more minor roles in the crime. Chalita Sangkhachart, the only female defendant in the case, was sentenced to 12 months in jail for hiding the valuables stolen from Vorayuth's wife, who died in the massacre. Surifath reportedly had a dispute with Worayuth after he failed to return land-title deeds to the latter. Worayuth had initially submitted the deeds as collateral for a loan, but after Worayuth repaid his debts, Surifath did not return the documents. Both men had threatened each other over the issue several times before the massacre occurred. The six other alleged accomplices were: Chalita Sangchote, 41, Prajak Boontoy, 36, Abdulloh Doloh, 30, Tawatchai Boonkong, 37, Arun Thongkham, 29, and Thanachai Jamnong, 41. Chalita is the only alleged female accomplice. |
