Guarapiranga Reservoir Body: The 1988 Sao Paulo Mutilation Case
A 53-year-old retired man who had gone fishing disappeared, and four days later, on September 29, 1988, his body was recovered beside a reservoir arm in the south zone of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The necropsy officially listed acute hemorrhage and multiple trauma as the cause of death. The loss of his eyes, ears, lips and other soft tissue appeared so precise that, after police photographs were leaked to a Sao Paulo tabloid in 1997, it became the world's best-known alleged human mutilation case. It became known as the Guarapiranga case, although the body was actually found on an arm of the adjacent Billings reservoir. A later forensic assessment found that a medical episode probably incapacitated the man and that scavengers, mainly vultures, removed the tissue. Ufologists who acquired the file reject that conclusion, and the dispute has persisted since. |
