One more thing i think about this. If its suicide and the shot was in the front of forehead, I think even a 38 revolver would get out of grip even just partially because your fist will be then twisted and do not give a firm grip on the butt. The wrist would be painfully twisted and would probably break on recoil even with a smaller caliber revolver.

I fired a lot of revolvers on the range when my father was alive and in the army. They have a lot of them in the arsenal and Father used to let me try them all. never fired one without noticeable recoil yet. even the 22 short gave a recoil especially if not gripped correctly.
