I guess that's the point, right? They want it looks painful so it can terrifies more otherwise they would just hang them. Makes me wonder why they don't use a handsaw instead of a smooth knife...

Anatomically, the action shot is flipped. Cell phones tend to do this a lot, not sure if they forgot to flip it prior to adding the captions, or it was flipped later.
