You're right, it's not that different. Georgia declared it's independence from Russia. Parts of Georgia wanted to remain part of Russia. A new leader took power in Georgia, and besides wanting to make Georgia a NATO member he also wanted to take control over the territories still loyal to Russia by force, and he did.
