It's a threat to the communist regime since one one hand it does not teach it's followers blind faith and obedience to the ruling party and on the other hand it teaches them truthfulness and ethics which would make them dangerous to a corrupt and dishonest regime. They would end up being free thinkers who were happy and self reliant.

I know when I was in Hong Kong for a seven month period every time we went in to Central and Mui Wo there were displays of photos everywhere of the Falun Gong practitioners that have been tortured.
