On the night of January 11 to 12, 2013, France carried out an unsuccessful operation in Bulo Marer, Somalia, to rescue a DGSE agent held since 2009 under the alias Denis Allex. Al-Shabaab released these photographs afterward. Two French commandos were killed, including the raid commander and a 40-year-old soldier who disappeared during the withdrawal. Al-Shabaab displayed and photographed the latter's body, calling him the operation's leader; French authorities later identified him as the missing soldier, whose name has never been released. France said Allex was almost certainly killed by his captors during the raid, while al-Shabaab said he was alive in another location and, days later, declared that it had condemned him to death. His body was never returned.
