The body of a 26-year-old amateur skydiver with no significant past medical history was found dead on a grassy airfield after a 4000-meter freefall jump.

According to witnesses, the victim’s main and reserve parachutes did not open and his body remained in a stable freefall arched position until ground impact, before bouncing once on the ground and falling back 3.5 meters away from the point of impact. The backpack the victim was still carrying contained the main and reserve parachutes still packed and properly attached to the harness. The victim’s altimeter, helmet and shoes were found nearby the weed-free area corresponding to the point of impact, which was 5 to 10 centimeters deep.

Police investigation revealed that the victim, who had practiced parachuting for more than a year and had performed 130 jumps beforehand, had died during his third consecutive jump of the day, as weather conditions were good. It also showed that he had recently experienced marital problems and had expressed suicidal thoughts in text messages sent to his wife just before his last jump.

An expert examination of the parachuting equipment ruled out any evidence of gear malfunction such as incorrect packing or chute failure. However, it showed that the automatic activation device (AAD), a security system that monitors altitude and vertical speed that normally allows the reserve parachute to be automatically deployed at low altitude if the skydiver has not released his main chute, had been disabled prior to the third jump, without any evidence of criminal intent.

A post-mortem examination performed two days later showed multiple blunt force trauma with a significant anteroposterior flattening of the body, consistent with a high-energy impact on the ground. There were extensive and symmetrical abrasions on the front of the body associated with open fractures of the elbows and knees, whereas no injury was observed on the back. These findings were in favor of a collision with the ground in a stable “belly-down” position. The victim’s clothes were torn at the location of the open fractures, and in areas subjected to considerable stretching forces such as the crotch and the underarms.

Upon internal examination, there were numerous comminuted fractures of the skull, the spine, the rib cage, the pelvis and the limbs. These skeletal injuries were associated with soft tissue hemorrhages and with severe blunt injuries to the internal organs including the brain, the heart and the lungs which showed extensive lacerations.

On the basis of the autopsy findings, testimony of witnesses and police investigation data, the manner of death was determined to be suicide.
