Re: Four Women Got Killed in Tiger Attack After They Were Collecting Leaves

Anyone know what "Tendu" leaves are used for? Are they a spice, or do they make tea, or what is the thing they are used for that makes them valuable? Could they be raised on a farm?

Tendu (Indian Ebony) leaves are one of the most important NTFP species in central India. The leaves of Tendu are used for wrapping bidi (Indian smoking tobacco).

An estimated 350000 tons of leaves worth US $2000 million, is collected annually throughout the forest of India.

The state of Madhya Pradesh is the major tendu patta producing state (25% of the country's total production) followed by Chhattisgarh
(20%), Orissa (15-20%) and Maharashtra (10 %).

Due to exploitation of the collectors by the traders, the state reserved the rights of collection and trade of the tendu leaves by declaring the product as a
nationalized item, Madhya Pradesh was first to nationalized tendu leaves collection in 1964 followed by Andhra Pradesh (1971) and
Orissa (1973).

Madhya Pradesh the government distributes 100% benefit to the collectors from the sale of tendu leaves in form of direct payment as well as bonus.

Whereas, Orissa govt. recently declared
sharing of 50% of the tendu levees grant for pluckers and binders' welfare fund and rest of the grant for infrastructure development of the districts of tendu leave collection.

On the other hand Andhra Pradesh does not have any benefit sharing arrangements and provides only wage rates to the collectors.

Tendu leaves collection and bidi rolling is estimated to provide 106 million person days of and 675 million person days respectively, which is worth Rs. 4515 million.

In spite of its lucrative business the trade is declining due to fall in demand following health concern, rising prices of raw materials and heavy taxation policy.

YET AGAIN, I learn something NEW that I had no clue about before!

People who just dismiss this site as a "horror site" just don't know what they are talking about!

I learn AT LEAST ONE new thing every week, if not more often!

Re: Four Women Got Killed in Tiger Attack After They Were Collecting Leaves

I don't see signs of the tiger's feeding on the bodies. Was this a territorial dispute?

Re: Four Women Got Killed in Tiger Attack After They Were Collecting Leaves

Forest officials suspect the attack was carried out by a tigress accompanied by her cubs. It is highly likely she ambushed the group aggressively to protect her young from the approaching humans.

The Forest Division has deployed tracking teams alongside 30 camera traps and 3 live-monitoring cameras to pinpoint the exact location and movements of the tigress.

This tragedy marks the 18th human death from human-wildlife conflict in that area since January 2026.

Angry residents are protesting, blaming the forest department and demanding that the tiger be captured or put down immediately.

Under Indian wildlife law, forest departments cannot immediately cage a tiger after an attack.

Because this incident occurred deep inside the forest, where the women entered the tiger's natural habitat, authorities must first prove the tiger is a habitual man-eater rather than an animal that just reacted defensively.

If the camera traps show the tiger tracking human settlements or showing abnormal aggression, a formal capture order will then be fast-tracked to quell the ongoing protests

They haven't located the tiger yet.

₹25,000 has already been paid directly to each victim’s family. This was handed over immediately at the site to cover urgent funeral and support costs.

The remaining balance of the ₹25 lakh state compensation will be processed and disbursed into the families' bank accounts after formal post-mortem reports and state paperwork guidelines are completed.

The tragedy happened because the women were forced to take risks to support their families financially. Collecting tendu leaves during the peak summer month of May serves as a critical, vital source of seasonal income for the local tribal communities.

A typical family relies on this collection to earn roughly ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 over a two-month period.

Because of the extreme economic dependency on these forest resources, hundreds of villagers regularly enter active tiger habitats despite the known dangers.
The forest department captured tigress T-2, which killed four women in a single strike while they were collecting tendu leaves in the Gunjewahi forest under Sindewahi range of Chandrapur district on Friday, bringing some relief to the region grappling with rising human-wildlife conflict.

The 14-year-old tigress from Tadoba was tranquilised around 7pm on Saturday near a pond in the Pawanpar area of the range by sharpshooter Ajay Marathe of Tadoba Rapid Response Team.

It was shifted to a cage before relocation to the transit treatment centre in Chandrapur.

A massive search operation from a 77-member team is under way to trace the tigress' three cubs, estimated to be between 16 and 18 months old.

The mission included three Special Tiger Protection Force teams from Tadoba working in shifts, a Rapid Response Unit, Shindewahi range forest guards, forest labourers, and mobile squad personnel.

Apart from this, the department has deployed two drones, 8 live motion-sensor cameras, and 20 camera traps across the forest area to track the cubs.

Further action will be taken as per guidance of higher officers once the location of the cubs is confirmed.
