Ahem... *clears throat* The educational bit for those not in the know: From the moment of death flies are attracted to bodies. Without the normal defences of a living creature, blowflies and houseflies are able to lay eggs around wounds and natural body openings (mouth, nose, eyes, ears, anus, genitalia). These eggs hatch and move into the body, often within 24 hours. The life cycle of a fly from an egg to maggot to fly takes from 2 - 3 weeks. It can take longer at low temperatures. Upshoot: this pic has been taken 0-3 days after death. :) Now someone please shoot me - I'm being all boring!! |
