Distance of insertion from armpit, so when they autopsy after knife removal, they can compare how much the wound has shifted from rigid insertion and/or rigor, and make adjustments in autopsy measurements. Clever. |

Ah, because the changes the body undergoes after death and the removal of the knife could cause the wound to shift about, while the armpit stays in more or less the same relative place? Thank you, detective.
