In a pre-dawn January 8, 2016 operation called Operation Black Swan, Mexican Navy special forces raided a safe house in the Las Palmas neighborhood of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, resulting in the third and final capture of Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman. The marines entered the house where Guzman had been hiding after escaping Altiplano prison through a tunnel six months earlier. Five cartel gunmen, reportedly members of the security cell led by Orso Ivan Gastelum Cruz ('El Cholo Ivan'), were killed in the firefight, while six people were detained and one marine was wounded. Guzman escaped through a tunnel beneath a wardrobe into the city's storm drains, surfaced blocks away, stole a vehicle and was arrested with Gastelum Cruz by Federal Police on the highway hours later. Eight rifles, a handgun, a rocket launcher and four vehicles were seized from the house. The five men killed were never publicly identified, although their bodies were identified by their families. Guzman was extradited to the United States in 2017.
