Okay, firstly I am not going to include the victim's name here, even though this is a rather famous case. The mods prefer that names not be used and unless one says otherwise, I won't print her name in this post.

Secondly, the case is not new. It is 13 years old, as are the crime scene photos from it. But I was only alerted to it today and managed to turn up a few crime scene photos. This is quite a rarity, since the girl was Welsh and crime scene pics of white females from the UK are extremely uncommon. They aren't the best pics in the world and they are 13 years old, but I'm posting anyway because of their rarity.

The dead girl was a 24 year old Welsh backpacker who was on a 2-year world tour. She was in Thailand for several weeks when her trip was cut about 21 months short. Largely because she was found raped and strangled to death in a ramshackle guesthouse.

The case has received a lot of media and government attention over the years, with charges of corruption, conspiracy, and coverups abounding. Over a dozen men have been arrested or implicated in the case (including a college professor, a hotel clerk, a Thai policeman, and many others) but the charges never stuck, all have walked free, and the case remains open with a 10K pound reward being offered for a conclusive conviction. Her parents continue to lobby for justice, even after 13 years, but every success is turned into a failure amidst a sea of police bungling, faked reports, intimidated witnesses, and other general nonsense.

What has been determined conclusively is that the girl was heard screaming in the night "No, get off me! Leave me alone! Get off me!" Other guests and staff did not immediately investigate and most allegedly hid in their rooms, fearing that a killer was loose in the hostel. When they did emerge to investigate, the killer had padlocked the girl's room from the outside and fled. When police arrived (at some point between 2 and 8 hours after the attack-reports differ), they got the door open and found the backpacker as you see in the photos. She was lying naked, face down on the bed, and had been strangled with a sarong she'd been wearing as a skirt that day. She had been raped, both vaginally and anally. And before someone points it out, no the dark spot on her ass in the photos is not an inserted object. No objects were inserted into her (other than the rapist's penis) and the mark you're seeing is where she defecated herself-either while being forcibly raped or strangled to death. Bowel evacuation is fairly common in both cases. But I felt the need to clarify it since I am sure half a dozen of you will be asking about whatever is stuck in her ass.

Case remains unsolved, as I said. Likely never will be solved and even if it is, a conviction is even more improbable, given how badly the case, scene, and evidence were bungled.

This is the most unusual set, I've seen for years. No, image quality isn't great, but decent though. And crimescene photos like these are usually only found in forensic textbooks, and the few available have been seen over and over again since the days, when we collected tiny scanned images on usenet.

It's a great post, though so sad. Maybe it's unsafe to tour Thailand alone, anyway NOBODY would deserve such a terrible end. Hope the SoB that made this is dying from a horrible disease. And I mean REALLY horrible.

Must be especially interesting to get to see some actual crime scene photos from a case you're familiar with and interested in. I have about a dozen pet cases I've tracked over the years and while I have stacks of reports (autopsy, scene investigations, statements, court transcripts, etc) crime scene pics are pretty rare. I can only imagine how keen I would be if presented with even a few photos from some of the more compelling cases I've studied.

Foreigners can get no justice in Thailand. Lots of us end up dead there, usually made to look like suicide. I would be nice if they would catch and punish the one or ones responsible for the crime but I doubt they ever will. They probably already know who did it but just don't care.
