In a nutshell:

A collared female had been found wounded by lions. She was in very bad shape and died one hour later after attempts at treatment by the rangers.

Although she had been attacked by lions, exact cause of death had to be established (just as in humans). Lions are the number one cause of death of hyenas and the lions had left significant wounds. The female had puncture wounds from claws and teeth in her neck, chest stomach, and inner back leg. A deep wound on her neck was the probable cause of death causing her to bleed out.

Organ and tissue samples were taken as routine (just as in human autopsies) but on dissection of the uterus, a fetus was found
