A 40 year old civil servant was found hanging in the back seat of her silver SUV this weekend. The vehicle was parked in the parking garage to a government building where she worked. Security guards saw the open door from a distance on a regular patrol, but did not think anything was amiss. When they returned to the area 2 hours alter on their rounds and the door was still open, they investigated.

The woman was discovered hanging out of the partially open door. She was fully dressed, but a rope had been tied from the handgrip above the back door to her neck.

The investigation is still ongoing, as the police have not yet formally ruled it a suicide or a homicide. They are leaning towards suicide, however.

The following facts were noted during the investigation:

The woman has been in an unregistered and semi-secret marriage with a co-worker for several years. The two recently had a publicly-noted argument and the man is being investigated.

The CCTV cameras in the garage showed no one other than the woman approaching her car when she was seen on them. No one seemed to approach the car at all on the cameras until the security guards many hours later.

A visual examination of the corpse was done at the scene and an autopsy has been performed, but only some of the results have been made public.

Her cause of death is asphyxia due to suspension. The ligature marks on her throat match the noose that was used. Her eyes were closed when she was found and her glasses were still on. Blood was running from her nose and had dribbled down past her mouth to her chin, but her tongue was not protruding out of her mouth. She had shit in her underpants. The forensics officer giving the interview stated that blood from the nose and voiding bowels and bladder was common with both hanging and strangulation.

She also had some minor abrasions on her palms that may have come from a struggle, from her clawing at the noose in the agony of strangulation, or from something entirely unrelated. They were minor and not considered to have contributed directly to her death, but are being analyzed.

Her time of death was estimated to be 12-24 hours prior to discovery. It was a weekend, so the garage was not very crowded. Nonetheless, based on the cctv evidence and the condition of the body, they think it was closer to 12 than 24.

Really unusual place to hang oneself. I'm surprised her oversized glasses stayed on.

Surely they have to rule this a suicide if no one else was captured on the CCTV footage. There's no mention of when she originally parked there, but if there had been someone in the car with her (assuming that she was killed), they would have been caught on CCTV leaving the vehicle after committing the deed.

Yeah, they are pretty strongly favoring suicide. But they're hedging on stating it outright. Which is unusual for Indonesia, tbh. My guess is that her family is pushing for an investigation and paying for the autopsy, so the cops have to be somewhat thorough.

And I agree about the glasses, though she is sitting and in a fairly tightly contained space, so maybe her decerebrate movements and agonal thrashing were impeded enough that they didn't go flying off as she strangled. Even then, I bet the headscarf was the main thing keeping them in place.

I've just read a few articles on this + one of them say that it's suspected she was pregnant. Maybe this could be the cause of suicide if true - ashamed to be 40 years old + pregnant with her employees baby? Another article states that she also has a school-aged daughter.

Yeah, I didn't mention the pregnancy thing because out of the three dozen articles I read, it was mentioned in like...one. So it felt like it might have been somebody speculating. But I'm following the case for the autopsy results so if they conclude that she was pregnant when those are released, I'll add it to the OP.

The Indonesians are frequently very thorough with releasing physical details of the autopsy, so if it's in there, it'll get brought up.

Very strange suicide. I often am amazed at the determination of those who chose to hang themselves where they seem to EASILY be able to stand up or sit up and stop the suicide. Must REALLY want to go. OR it is a murder staged as a suicide by hanging.

Same - I'm thinking that's the case; killed herself due to the shame it would bring. Sad if so, since she has now left her daughter motherless.

That was my line of thinking got too much for her the burden and if it does turn out she was pregnant was the final straw..poor daughter
