(Updated 8:55 p.m.) Malacañang on Sunday evening confirmed that terrorist and bomb-maker Abdul Basit Usman has been killed.

"Terror suspect Basit Usman was killed in a firefight in Guindulungan, Maguindanao at around noon today," Palace spokesman Herminio Coloma Jr. said, citing information from Armed Forces of the Philippines field operatives.

Usman was the second target of a police Special Action Force operation in Mamasapano town in Maguindanao on Jan. 25. The primary target, Zulkifli bin Hir (alias Marwan), was killed during the operation.

Usman managed to escape the SAF troopers, 44 of whom were killed in a clash with members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, and other armed groups in the area.

The military launched an all-out offensive against the BIFF and Usman in Maguindanao from February to March.

"We are awaiting the submission of the AFP’s after-operations report which is forthcoming," Coloma also said.

Maguindanao police: Usman killed by MILF

According to an earlier report, Maguindanao provincial police chief S/Supt. Nickson Muksan said Usman was killed by members of the MILF 118th Base Command in Barangay Muti in Guindulungan before noon.

Muksan cited information from barangay captain Gayak Midtimbang, Guindulungan Mayor Midpantao Midtimbang, and Toks Upam of the MILF-Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities.

Authorities had yet to retrieve Usman's body as of Sunday afternoon.

According to the PNP Board of Inquiry on the Mamasapano clash, Usman was involved in bombings in General Santos City, Tacurong City, and Cotabato City between 2002 to 2007.

One of the bombings — at a mall in General Santos City in 2002 — left 15 people dead and 44 wounded.

The US had set a $1-million bounty for Usman, who is wanted in the Philippines for multiple murder and multiple frustrated murder. — JDS, GMA News
