The photographs show the aftermath of a fatal crash on a rural two-lane highway. The direction of traffic, the left-hand-drive vehicles, the soil and the ambulance markings place the scene in Latin America, and a member who said he lived a few hundred kilometres away described it as a car running under a raised tow-truck ramp, which fits the way the roof and windscreen frame are sheared off. The account long attached to these images, naming a driver charged with drink-driving and vehicular homicide in the United States, does not fit the scene: no such case has been traced, and the blood-alcohol figure it quotes is roughly twice the level generally considered fatal. The images were already circulating in 2007, before that account was attached to them.
