I asked a crime scene investigator about that once, and he said the purpose of taking black and white photos was to improve the contrast in the images. They don't always do it, but they use black and whites for latent fingerprints, so he said. I would imagine they use it for other things as well, but that was just one example. Not sure why they would have taken black and white images here.
