Facial Trauma: Motorcycle Road Rash and James Vance's Shotgun Injury (1985)
James Vance, 20, shot himself beneath the chin with a shotgun at a church playground in Sparks, Nevada, on December 23, 1985, shortly after his 18-year-old friend Raymond Belknap died by the same method. Vance survived but was severely disfigured, underwent more than 140 surgical procedures, and died three years later. Their families brought a lawsuit against Judas Priest and CBS Records, alleging that subliminal messages had prompted the pact; in 1990, a Nevada judge dismissed the suit after finding no conclusive evidence. The remaining photographs are unrelated examples of facial trauma used in medical teaching.  ·  ·  ·  · |
