Facial Trauma: Motorcycle Road Rash and James Vance's Shotgun Injury (1985)
The most recognizable photograph in this set shows James Vance, who on December 23, 1985, at age 20, survived shooting himself under the chin with a shotgun in a church playground in Sparks, Nevada, moments after his friend Raymond Belknap, 18, died the same way. Vance was left severely disfigured despite more than 140 surgical procedures and died three years later. Their families sued the band Judas Priest and CBS Records, claiming subliminal messages drove the pact; a Nevada judge dismissed the case in 1990, finding no conclusive evidence.
