It is estimated that 40,000 persons went missing as a consequence of the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. Of that number an estimated 30,000 persons went missing in Bosnia and Herzegovina, around 6,500 persons went missing from the Croatia conflict and an estimated 4,500 persons went missing from the Kosovo conflict. A total of 10,281 people are still listed as missing and their fate is unknown, including a little over 3,600 Serbs.

Here the skeletal remains of a former soldier of the 'HOS' (Croatian: 'Hrvatske obrambene snage' or 'Croatian Defence Forces') is found and exhumed. The exact location of this war grave is unknown, but I would assume the Eastern Slavonia region of Croatia which saw the heaviest early fighting and bloodiest battles; in particular besieged cities including Vukovar, Borovo Selo, Vinkovci and Osijek.

The HOS were the paramilitary arm of the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) from 1991 to 1992, during the first stages of the Yugoslav Wars. During the Croatian War of Independence, the HOS organized several early companies and participated in Croatia's defense. At the peak of the war in Croatia, the HOS was several battalions in size. 481 foreign volunteers from 35 countries defended Croatia between 1991 and 1995. As of July 2010 this is the confirmed identified number, of which 72 were Killed in Action and at least 88 were wounded, many severely. (Source: croatia.org)
Some estimates put this figure as high as 500 to even 1000 foreign volunteers who fought in Croatia alone. The total number for the rest of the former Yugoslavia is much greater.
