My aunt had a friend whose abusive,viciously sadistic husband often beat the living shit out of her & repeatedly threatened to kill her & her son if they ever left him. Not going to give all the details here,but a night transpired when he discovered her leaving plan (hidden overnight bag, a bit of money & toiletries) & decided he was going to make good on his threats.He got out his hunting rifle & told them they were never going to disobey him again.Somehow her teenage disabled son(whom he also abused )managed to disarm & kill him, & ended up being committed to a mental health facility for several years. He was released & he & his mum live quietly together in the suburbs.
