The accident happened at around 5 am, May 12th, 2014, on Av. Coronel Teixeira, Ponta Negra, Brazil. 5 people returning from a party were pushing a pickup truck that had broken down(or out of fuel) when suddenly another car crashed into the rear of the pickup and straight for the people.





The impact was so violent that it severed the victims' legs.


A man and a woman, José Henrique Monteiro Galvão (18) and Keyllene Nogueira de Almeida (28) died.



The other three, Rodrigo de Oliveira Barros, Jhony Lemos Rodrigues(pictured) and Wesley Tavares da Silva were seriously injured and taken to a Hospital.


The impact severed the victims' right legs below the knee.



A breathalyser test carried out on the scene proved that the driver, Renato Fabiano da Silva Benigo (37) was drunk.


He was taken into custody and charged with intentional homicide (when there is an intention to kill). What looks like José's hat can be seen, same hat as in one of the party pictures.


The driver had 129 points in his national driver's license, 12 of which were violations in the last 12 months alone.


The driver was travelling at a speed above 130 km per hour, according to experts from the Institute of Criminalistics (IC) who visited the scene.


Some reports say the pickup that was being pushed was out of fuel. It's also unclear if the group was travelling in the car or came to help.


Keyllene Nogueira de Almeida (28) and José Henrique Monteiro Galvão (18) both died.


Pictured here is Jhony Lemos Rodrigues who was injured and his girlfriend Keyllene Nogueira de Almeida who died. This picture was probably taken a few hours before the accident, judging by their clothes, especially hers, and their event wristband that can also be seen in the accident photos.

Keyllene had been dating Johnny since October the year before. She was an only child. At the woman's funeral, her father reported that he learned of the accident 3 hours after the accident. "My wife got a call, but she thought it was a hoax. In fact, you are speechless. Losing your only daughter is something I don't wish for any parent".

According to her father, Keyllene was trained in public health management and planned to study aesthetics. "She and I were very close. She was always cheerful, she was close to her family, and an extrovert,"

The driver, Renato Fabiano da Silva Benigo (37) was intoxicated, and arrested and charged with intentional homicide. When questioned, Renato Fabiano appeared to be in shock and decided to only speak in court. He admitted that he was drunk and driving at high speed, and claimed that when he saw the victims, he did not have time to stop. In prison he has received death threats and suffered physical attacks.

Thanks, I spent some good time on this one :) The only info I was unable to find was what sentence the driver got, spent almost 2 hours and found nothing :/
I possibly found some corruption, the driver is the brother of a lawyer who is married to some politician, or former senator. Maybe this was all swept under the carpet :(

I found this from an article dated 24th November 2014:

Administrative assistant Renato Fabiano dos Santos Benigno, 36, may not sit on the dock for the death of José Henrique Monteiro Galvão, 18 and Keyllene Nogueira de Almeida, which occurred in the early hours of May 12 this year, when the brown S-10 pickup and OAK 2643 plates that he drove shelved in a Fiat Strada, with JXP 6657 plates, on the Ponta Negra road.


Contrary to the opinion of Attorney General Nicolau Libório dos Santos Filho, the judges of the Second Criminal Chamber of the Amazonas Court of Justice, determined last Monday (17) the referral of the Criminal Action that is being processed in the 1st Court of the Jury to Specialized Traffic Crimes Court, for the court to assess the records and issue its pronouncement on jurisdiction.


If the court considers that it is within your competence to judge Renato Benigno's action, he will no longer sit on the dock. But if he understands a different exception of incompetence, the records will return to the Second Criminal Chamber, which will decide who will be responsible for judging the administrative assistant.


Renato's defense appealed to the Court of Justice with the exception of incompetence of the 1st Court of the Jury, trying to transfer the case to the Court Specialized in Traffic Accidents.


Renato Benigno, had already entered the first degree, but Judge Mirza Telma de Oliveira Cunha, dismissed the request for the defense's incompetence exception, determining the continuation of the feat in the 1st Court of the Jury Court.


The accident


The accident occurred around 5 am on May 12, at Avenida Coronel Teixeira, Ponta Negra, West Zone of Manaus. The victims were returning from a forró house located in the Tarumã neighborhood and were pushing a broken vehicle to the side of the road when they were hit by the model S10 pickup, killing José Henrique Monteiro Galvão, 18 and Keyllene Nogueira de Almeida, leaving Rodrigo de Almeida still injured. Oliveira Barroso, Weslem Tavares e Silva and Jhony Lemos Rodrigues.
