Drowning Victims Recovered from a River After Several Weeks in the Water

Drowning refers to death occurring within 24 h of a submersion incident and may be a difficult diagnosis to make as there are no diagnostic (pathognomonic) findings at autopsy. Although drowning may be considered a specialized form of asphyxia in which environmental oxygen (air) is displaced by a liquid (usually water), the mechanism of death is much more complicated as it also involves hydrostatic and osmotic effects of inhaled fluid within the small airways.

Case1

This decomposing drowning victim was recovered from a river after being several weeks in the water, note the extensive adherent river ‘‘slime’’ (Fig.1). An example of postmortem skin defects can be seen on the face (Fig.2) and on the trunk region (Fig.3), these can be misinterpreted as true injuries. No further info about this case.

Drowning is a leading cause of mortality, morbidity, and disability across the world. An estimated 372,000 drowning deaths occur worldwide annually, although this is very likely to be under-estimated. Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths. Children, males and individuals with increased access to water are most at risk of drowning.

Case2

Marked decomposition in a drowning victim who was recovered from a river approximately 4 weeks after he was witnessed jumping into the river. Note the extensive skin slippage, as well as river ‘‘slime’’ on the body surface. No further info about this case.

Ok I’ve decided river slime autopsies or body recovery is not my thing. Rotten, decaying, burned, bloated or hanging is ok. I don’t like these (drown slime):as a job.

Re: Drowning Victims Recovered from a River After Several Weeks in the Water

Drowning suicides have been a motif in art and literature (see: Ophelia and the Lady of Shalott) through history so as to infuse the gesture with an almost romantic sheen. If those contemplating the act saw the bloated, gory reality, they’d either choose another method or to prolong their biological existence.

A small amount of make up, a quick vinegar douche and they’ll be freshened up for date night.

Re: Drowning Victims Recovered from a River After Several Weeks in the Water

When I was 11 my cousin and his side of the family went to a campsite with a river running through it. The bloated body of someone who was missing was riding along the way, and completely freaked the shit out of everyone there. Then he remembered it being completely quiet (aside from some sobbing) when all the families at the campsite came together and carefully watched as the police came over to check the body out, and they covered/fished it out. They were nowhere near the body, but they could fucking SMELL it in the air as they hauled it out, and as they were basically asked to leave the campsite. It fucked him and everyone else's summer up completely, but I couldn't help but become interested in what a body like that would look like. Lo and behold, you can load up several pics of bloaters at your fingertips now. I can't really say if that's really a good thing or a bad thing...

I personally think it's a good thing.

I also am curious about what that smell actually smells like, because I've heard that rotting human corpses are more distinct & repulsive to living humans than, say, the rotting corpse of a deer or other animals.
